Family Portrait by SycamoreSea Family Portrait by SycamoreSea
Today is ~DragonBlessed's 21st birthday.
These are the characters from her beautiful novel, The Seventh Raven.
It wasn't really possible to get a good picture of this painting, and I didn't really try. (I also made some changes after I took this photo, like to Nathan's face.)
There is a lot about this painting that really frustrates me (TOO MUCH SKIN), but also a lot that I'm happy with (like Santiago - always Santiago ;D). I don't really know why poor Nathan ended up front and center since he is the LEAST likely to be there but it's too late now.
Also it was really hard to draw these characters without being able to consult their creator on what they look like?? Especially Enoch who has like five second in the whole novel. B(
This painting has been a huge factor in my loss of sleep the past couple weeks (in addition to that three job thing), but it... is a fulfillment of a promise.
Happy birthday, my admiral.

Head over and check out the sketch, their faces are so much more awesome:…

Awesome use of the background picture...I am amazed at the creativity and talent I see in the use of my stock pictures!  Glad I could be a part of something amazing!  As for your comment about too much skin...hmm...many years ago I asked an artist friend of mine why my skin tones always looked so flat in my paintings and artworks.  She told me..."Human skin has to be laid over an undercoat of black--there is blackness in human skin that you cannot escape!"  And she showed me a dozen or so works which showed artists trying to create skin tone without a black underlayment.  Darn if she wasn't spot on...

Wow, thanks so much for the compliments! I'm delighted you're so pleased. c:
As for the skin tone... that's really interesting! I really might have to try that, it sounds just crazy enough to work. Do you know any artists who have done that whom you could recommend? I'd love to see how it worked out. c:

Holy cow is this great! All the characters are so unique and yet it doesn't look strange to have them all together. Also that background is fabulous.

I actually really loved how Liam and Nathan were the ones closest to Cassandra, since they're the ones in the novel who are... always closest to her, it seems. And also the fact that Enoch is covered in moths just a;ldkfjasdf makes my life. And you painted Aspen...
I haven't really stopped staring at this since Saturday, haha. I just love it so much.

Well... I did try to put SOME thought into their placement, at least whom I wanted close to whom. (Although next time I'm just putting Santiago front and center because SANTIAGO. He is the only one who doesn't really fight me.) Aspen... worked out surprisingly well for me though, considering how little practice I have with dogs. xD I hope he's a suitable shape at least.
I actually hadn't really stopped staring at it for a week either, and it has so much that bothers me now, so I leave the staring in your capable hands (eyes) and hope that you do not begin to fear it as I do. :p I am sincerely overjoyed that you love it so. <3

This is so ambitious! I'm really impressed by the number of people you can fit into one picture :)
I also really love the background. Those ruins are just lovely, and I love the autumn setting <3

It takes a lot of effort, but I really like doing it! In the back of my head, I want to do a picture with all my fae characters and all your fae characters together. xD But shhh, don't tell, it's a secret since I'll never have time. xD
And thank you. <33

I tend to get really frustrated when I'm trying to fit in more than one or two characters, I can't imagine doing 8 (9 if you count the dog) characters! I should try and challenge myself a bit on that subject one day though!
Oh, that'd be super sweet :D
You're welcome <3
